3 Ways to be a Better Etsy Customer

3 Ways to be a better Etsy customer
If you are an Etsy customer, but you don't have a shop of your own, here are three things Etsy sellers wish you would do when shopping:

1. Fully read and understand the listing
Please take time to fully read and and understand the item description and to thoroughly look at the photos of what you are buying. Most sellers will try to describe and show the item as accurately as possible. If you receive something that is flawed and the flaw is easily visible in the photo and/or described in the text description, don't leave a bad review for something that was obvious before you purchased. If an item is described as three inches long but you want it to be five inches long, don't buy it expecting it to miraculously become five inches long. If you are looking for a book with a specific title, don't buy something that's close and then be mad when it's not the title you wanted when the photos and description clearly state the actual title.

In THIS Etsy shop, I sell handmade envelopes, most of which are made from a variety of magazine pages, many of which are quite thin. A buyer recently said she thought I might have magically figured out a way to make them thicker and left a bad review, fully knowing that the envelopes she would receive would be thin. Another buyer bought a book that looked sort of, kind of like a book they wanted and then they were mad and left a bad review because it wasn't the one they actually wanted...even though the title and other details were clearly on display. Don't be like these customers.

2. Understand shipping
You've placed your order and are eagerly awaiting its arrival . . . but your package doesn't arrive as quickly as you expected. Or it gets stuck in a shipping facility for days on end. Or there's a natural disaster that disrupts package and mail delivery. Or there's a mail services strike in your country.

Once your seller drops off the package, shipping is out of our hands. It is your sellers responsibility to:
  • Ship within a reasonable time frame
  • Have shipping time frames noted in their Etsy listings/shops
  • Submit a tracking number for all packages valued at over $10
It is NOT your seller's responsibility to make sure the mail or package carrier actually delivers within a certain time frame. Etsy gives you an *estimated* delivery window, but it's still in the hands of the carrier to actually deliver.

If you order an item on a Friday or Saturday or there's a holiday within a day or two of your order, give your seller an extra day or two for shipping to take into consider the weekend. We aren't Amazon. Most of us don't have the capacity to be shipping 24/7!

Of course, if you item is delayed by the postal or other delivery service, it's perfectly OK to message the seller and ask about their policies. Some sellers may have policies listed related to extended delays. If not, ask. For polite customers and those that have reasonable expectations, I'm far more willing to make exceptions to my policies, including for shipping issues.

3. Contact the shop owner before leaving a bad review
Before you leave a review of less than 5 stars, please reach out to the seller. Most of us want to make sure you're happy with your purchase. For the most part, my customers have been great and communicated well before, during, and after their purchases. However, a few have opted to leave a bad or subpar review, even acknowledging in private messages that they were at fault for not understanding a listing or expecting something other than what was advertised (see above!).

If you're an Etsy seller (or a seller on other platforms), what do you want your customers to know before they buy? What advice do you have for customers?

5 Baby Shower Gift Ideas

5 Baby Shower Gifts

One of my dearest friends became an auntie yesterday and will become an auntie a second time very soon. She asked recently about ideas for baby shower gifts. Here are my top 5:
Links may be affiliate links. Thank you in advance if you make purchases through these links as they may result in a small commission for me.

1. Lingerie bag
A lingerie bag is perfect for all the small bits that come with a baby but get separated or lost in the wash -- especially socks! Besides socks, I used it for drool bibs, gloves, and mittens. I also keep all of our family's single, unmatched socks in the bag, and over time I usually am able to find the matching socks! I like to use a big lingerie bag rather than small one as that gives the items inside of it room to move around and actually get washed while still staying contained. A large bag also leaves room for my own unmatched socks which I do wash every time I need to wash the little kiddo's socks.

The bag I use for baby socks is actually an old lingerie bag that belonged to my grandmother, but here a few good options to check out on Amazon.com:
2. Restaurant delivery gift cards
In the past 10 years or more, I've only been involved in one group that has done a meal train for a family in need. When I was a kid, meal trains were incredibly common for new parents, sick people, grieving people, and so on. Someone would organize a group to make and deliver meals to the person or family in question. Although I know these still happen, it seems they are far less common than they used to be.

When my uncle passed away, someone arranged a meal delivery service for my child and I as we were his caretakers and he was our best friend. The meal service was great, but it had limitations -- pre-selected meals, allergens I couldn't avoid, and didn't always match up with what we were in the mood for.

Consider a restaurant delivery certificate instead. GrubHub, DoorDash, Postmates or similar gift cards will provide ease and payment for the new parents or parents to be while also allowing them the flexibility to order food that fits their taste preferences, dietary needs, and so on.

3. A photo mini printer and tons of cartridges
In this day and age, many of us tend to keep our photos on our phones. Gone are the days of dropping off a roll of film or a disposable camera at a store for developing and printing.

I miss having actual printed photos. It's nice to scroll through the photos on my phone, but printing them out is better! Make it easy for new parents by getting them a photo mini printer and plenty of cartridges. I love my Kodak mini printer and wish I'd had it when my child was a baby.

Here's the printer I use on Amazon.com, as well as extra cartridges:

4. A baby first aid and grooming kit
A combined baby first aid and grooming kit was one of the most useful and thoughtful gifts I received when my 23 year old was born. Even though I never used several of the first aid items, knowing I had them gave me peace of mind. And, the grooming items were more useful than I ever expected -- as a first time mom, I had no idea how often I'd need to use some items like baby nail clippers!

As a gift giver, combined baby first aid and grooming kits have always been a hit as a baby shower gift! Every time I give one, someone at the shower says what a thoughtful and important gift it is and asks why they didn't think of it.

Here are my two favorites on Amazon.com:
5. Diapers and wipes
If you know if the family you are buying for plans to use cloth or disposable diapers, buy them some! Diapers are expensive and having a reserve is beneficial. Buy one small package of newborn and then larger packages of the next two sizes, if the recipient will have room to store them. If you are hosting a baby shower, ask all of the guests to bring a pack of diapers in addition to any other gifts -- at my sister's baby shower, not only did we ask that everyone bring one package of diapers, but we gave a raffle ticket to everyone that actually followed through! At the end of the baby shower, we raffled off a movie theater gift certificate.

What are your "go to" baby shower gifts? Leave a comment and let me know!

For older kids and partners, consider grabbing some of my download-and-print lunchbox notes -- available on Etsy HERE. Print them out and slip a note into your child's lunchbox or backpack or into your partner's purse or bag.

Mom2MomEd Gift Guide: What busy moms want

Mom2MomEd Blog: Holiday Gift Guide--What busy moms REALLY want
Friends, have you thought about what to get for the moms on your list this holiday season?

As two busy moms, McKenzie and I spend an embarrassing amount of time fantasizing about what we wish we could afford to buy for ourselves to make our lives easier...seriously, it comes up at least once in every conversation we have. So, we have compiled a list of what we believe are some great gift options for the busy moms in your life--it could be for YOUR mom, your wife or girlfriend, a sister or aunt, a best friend, or any other mom that's on your list.

But first...

A story on what NOT to buy a mom...

Picture the Christmas tree, a small pile of gifts beneath it, a happy mom, smiling dad, and excited 3 year old little boy. So sweet! Gifts start to get unwrapped and the paper and ribbons are flying. The little boy is oh-ing and ah-ing over everything. The dad is thrilled that you remembered his favorite movie and got the DVD and a few other things he had mentioned over the past year.

You put a lot of thought into the gifts you bought for your small family.

You expected your partner to get you something with just as much thought behind it--especially since he asked you for a list of things you really wanted.Your list included a few books that had just come out.

He hands you a package that looks and feels like it might be a couple of books. He tells you that he knows it's what you really wanted for Christmas.

You are thrilled!

Until you open the package...

...it is a modem. A computer modem.

Something you neither wanted nor needed.

You look at him confused, and he says, "Well, I want a new modem so I'm going to take the modem out of my computer and put it in yours and I'll put this one in mine! Then you get a newer modem too! It's like a gift for both of us!"

I looked around for the books I was hoping for. Nope. Nothing. No other gifts beneath the tree.

Your gift isn't even a gift for you.

Worst. Christmas. Present. Ever.

Anyhow, with that out of the way, here are some gift giving ideas for the moms in your life! Be sure you put some thought into your gift giving and that the gifts you give are actually wanted by the people you are giving them to--gift giving shouldn't be about you, but rather about the person on the receiving end.

WHAT THESE TWO MOMS WANT:
Coffee--Starbucks gift cards (or their preferred coffee shop...McKenzie and I are B.I.G. Starbucks fans...like HUGE...like, we would not turn down Starbucks gift cards...ever...); Starbucks VIA packs or a bag of coffee beans*

Tea--but a kind or flavor she likes and the really upscale, pricey version that almost no mom would splurge on for herself*

*A note about coffee mugs...unless you KNOW she likes a particular style of mug (travel or regular) or that she is in need of mugs, consider NOT buying her a mug. Most moms I know have TONS of coffee mugs already and don't need more--seriously, we don't want more dishes! We already have a dirty sink full!

Books--A book she has been wanting but keeps putting off buying

TIME ALONE...seriously. Buy her a Starbucks gift card, a book or a stack of her favorite magazines, and watch her kids for a few hours while she goes and enjoys time to herself at a coffee shop.

Adult beverages--bottles of her favorite wine or a 6-pack of a favorite beer or a gift subscription for her favorites

Lip balm--McKenzie loves EOS (click HERE for a really cool pack of 8--it's like Lip Smackers for moms!) while Malea prefers Burt's Bees (especially THIS one).

Essie Nail Polish--like THIS really cute holiday gift set.

Professional auto detailing--preferably done by a mobile service that will come to her house!

Gorgeous candles from Anthropologie or Bath and Body Works (if you know what kind of scents she likes)

Gift cards to Bath and Body Works or the Body Shop if she's into delicious and luxurious lotions and soaps or to Sephora or Ulta if she loves makeup.

GO BIG OR GO HOME GIFT IDEAS FOR MOM:
Housekeeping--buy her a set of visits from a housekeeper. McKenzie and I both agree that a housekeeper, even if only for an hour or two per week would really revolutionize our lives! If you can go large with your Christmas gift for that special mom in your life, spring for a weekly visit for as many weeks as you can afford!

Meal Services--Ok, we both think meal services that send you a box of ingredients and a recipe, but seriously, how about a service that prepares the meals and delivers them already put together? I don't mean calling up a restaurant and ordering food. I mean, a dedicated meal service like a personal chef type of deal. Even if it's just a meal delivered once per week--maybe on mom's busiest night of her week--it could go a long way towards sanity! Just make sure the meal service or delivery actually has options mom will like and is able to eat (for example, I have a severe dairy allergy and prefer vegan foods anyhow).

IDEAS FROM OUR MOM FRIENDS:
Movie tickets and free babysitting--Buy her a pair of movie tickets pay for her babysitter too! Either give her a pair so she can take her spouse or partner with her, take her yourself and arrange for the babysitting to take place at your house so she doesn't have to worry about any cleaning up, or send her to the movies on her own while you watch her kids if you know she likes movies alone!

Bubble bath kit--a gorgeous bubble bath that truly foams up and smells great, a candle and lighter or matches to go with it, loofah or body scrub brush.

Appliance repairs--Is her dishwasher broken and you know someone that can fix it? Make it happen!

A Camelback and/or a Hydro Flask water bottle

New cookbooks--Alton Brown's newest was specifically mentioned, but I also would add Thug Kitchen, Everyday Italian by Giada de Laurentiis, and Taste of Home Casseroles, Slow Cooker, and Soups.

A new pillow and new, super soft throw blankets

High quality baking sheets and cupcake tins with high quality, cute, colorful cupcake liners--you know, the good ones that are more expensive than she'd be willing to buy herself!

Entry into a 5k or other race she has been talking about--one friend specifically mentioned the Spartan Race, but for fun, why not buy entry for you and your mom friend to a Bubble Run or Color Run so you can do it together?

Jewelry--but ONLY if you know her particular style.

A gift card for her favorite clothing store, or if she's active a gift card to her favorite athletic store (I'd take one to Fleet Feet, personally!)

Uggs boots

Free babysitting (do you see a theme here?!)

Garden stones with kids' handprints or footprints on them

Use of the bathroom without interruption (Isn't this on ALL of our mom wishlists????)
Moms, what is on YOUR wishlist?

20 ways to treat your fellow moms

Mom2MomEd Blog: 20 ways to treat your fellow moms
In a recent post, McKenzie wrote about building up your mom tribe. We thought we would expand on the idea with 20 specific tasks you can do to support your fellow moms! Be sure to leave a comment and let us know how YOU show support for your fellow moms or how other moms have given you support.

These ideas range from easy, fast, and free to some requiring a bit more effort, time, and money, but they all are worthwhile!

1. Send her a note through good old fashioned snail mail telling her how great she is--just a few sentences may be enough.

2. Help her with a cleaning or organizing project, especially if she's been talking about a particular project for a while but hasn't made time for it.

3. Send a quick "Just wanted to say I am glad we are friends!" text.

4. Send her some gorgeous flowers or an incredibly hard to kill plant (because most of us moms don't have time to water regularly!)

5. Write out a list of 5 things you admire about her parenting skills and give it to her.

6. Offer to watch her kids so she can go to the grocery store ALONE.

7. ...and give her a $5 coffee shop gift card first so she can sip her coffee ALONE while she shops!

8. If you know what kind of scents she likes, buy her a luscious, smooth NICE body lotion...make it an upgrade from what she probably buys for herself.

9. Has she mentioned a fitness or other class she wants to try? Find out when it is, buy her a session, and watch her kids at your house so she can go to the class.

10. Gift her with an amazing bubble bath or Lush bath bomb and a high quality loofah.

11. Buy or make her a whole fruit smoothie for a little boost.

12. Buy her a single movie ticket and watch her kids so she can see a movie with a rating above G or PG uninterrupted and ALONE.

13. Get her a new journal and a great pen.

14. If there is a charity close to her heart, make a donation in her honor--be sure the charity sends notes to honorees, and maybe write a little note to her yourself too.

15. If she talks about wanting nicer nails but never makes time for a manicure, gather up your manicure supplies and go treat her to a manicure in her kitchen. Make sure you hit up Starbucks or her favorite coffee shop on your way over!

16. Does she love to read? Buy her a book she's been talking about or that you think she might love.

17. ...and invite her kids to your house for a couple of hours so she can read without interruptions (and tell her to read for those two hours--NO HOUSEWORK ALLOWED!).

18. Tell her to NOT make anything for dinner and then surprise her with a pizza or other food delivery for dinner (pay for the food, delivery, and tip for her so she just has to open the door and take the food!).

19. Take her kids to the park or invite them to play at your house while she does whatever she wants...but insist that she spend the time doing what she WANTS, not what she feels obligated to do.

20. Listen. Just listen...next time you ask how she really is, and she replies with "Fine", don't accept that. Ask her how she REALLY is and listen. Be there. Let her talk without trying to fix problems. Sometimes moms just need to talk and we don't want someone else to fix things for us...we just want to be heard and validated.

What else would you add? Are there things another mom has done to support you or that you have done to support members of your mom tribe?

And, ladies, if you want your husbands, partners, or others in your life who can never get the gift or treat giving right, consider printing this list and giving it to them as a starting point!

Mom2MomEd Gift Guide Elementary School Readers Book Advent Calendar

Mom2MomEd Blog: Holiday Gift Guide -- Books for Elementary Aged Readers
Last week, we posted our first GIFT GUIDE which was about books for pre and early readers and how to use books as a holiday Advent calendar--perfect for starting a new holiday tradition with your children!

We are big believers in reading and think books make great books, and that is true for all ages! This post includes books that both McKenzie and I have loved ourselves or that my son has enjoyed. I also have used several of these to turn some of her tutoring students on to the joys of reading.

A little aside here--growing up across the street from McKenzie and being a few years older, I used to pass down many of my books to her and to another neighbor to read. I LOVED sharing my love of reading back then and I still love sharing my literary interests with others today (can you tell?)!

Anyhow, this post is strictly books for elementary age kids from early elementary to upper elementary age. You'll have to judge by your child's reading skills when selecting books for your children--I strongly suggest choosing a few books that are a little easy, a few that are right on point, and a few that will be a challenge. The easier titles and the ones right on level will help increase your child's confidence while the more challenging titles will bring you together as you read them side by side.

Every book on this list is linked to Amazon for your convenience, and just as you can use early and pre-reader books to create an Advent countdown for your younger kids, you can do the same for your older kids too! Simply wrap a book up for every day from December 1st through Christmas eve. Put them all in a pile or a basket and let your child choose a book per day leading up to Christmas.

For elementary kids of all ranges of ages/abilities/levels:
The Year of the Dog and The Year of the Rat by Grace Lin (There's a third book in the series, but I haven't read it: Dumpling Days.)
Guys Read: Funny Business by Jon Scieszka (This one is particularly good for....guys! The author has made it his mission to encourage boys to read more.)
Flush and Hoot by Carl Hiaasen (note: these do contain a small amount of swearing)
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

If your kids are interested in history, these works of historical fiction are terrific:
Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
Snow Treasure by Marie McSwigan
Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Corr
Maus and Maus II by Art Speigelman (These are actually graphic novels, but they are truly literary in nature. JP is 18 and still goes back to them!)

We also love these non-fiction books:
Grossology: The Science of Really Gross Things by Sylvia Branzei and Jack Keely
Grossology and You: Really Gross Things About Your Body by Sylvia Branzei and Jack Keely
Animal Grossology: The Science of Creatures Gross and Disgusting by Sylvia Branzei and Jack Keely

If you are concerned about the cost of buying so many books, consider the tips in THIS post from McKenzie, or click on the titles above and see if anyone is selling the books used for a penny plus postage on Amazon!

Mom2MomEd Gift Guide: Pre and Early Readers Children's Book Advent Calendar

Mom2MomEd Blog: Holiday Gift Guide--Pre and Early Reader Advent Book Calendar
With the winter holidays pretty much just around the corner, McKenzie and I wanted to share some of our favorite gifts to both give and to get! Over the next few weeks we'll have a weekly gift guide centered around various age groups, specific categories of gifts, and more.

Today, we are sharing BOOKS for younger kids--toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarten. And, although we these are the best age groups for these kids, please don't be afraid to read them to your babies--even newborns!--or to have fun with them with your older kids. In fact, if you have kids older than these groups who happen to be struggling to read at their grade level, encourage them to read some of these books for a boost of confidence.

Some of these books are cute, simple picture books while others may become cherished keepsakes.

While you can give them for any holiday, birthday, or just because, we particularly like the idea of giving one book per day from December 1st through Christmas day (or Christmas Eve, depending on when your family celebrates) for those that celebrate this holiday. Often this is called a Christmas Advent Countdown or Christmas Advent Book Calendar.

To do a holiday Advent Book Calendar/Countdown, you will need to gather 24 or 25 books (depending on whether you end on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day) and wrap each book individually. You can put them in a particular order for giving and opening or you can make it random. If you decide to use a particular order, be sure to number the outside of each package!

Below is a list of our picks for your Advent Christmas Book Calendar include--we've listed more than 25 so you can pick and choose. Also, for your purchasing convenience, each title is linked to Amazon.com.

Giant Children by Brod Bagert
Golden Books (any or all of them!)
Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle
Little Blue Truck Leads the Way by Alice Schertle
Shel Silverstein poetry books

We'd love to see pictures of your Book Advent Calendars! Post pictures on social media with the tag #mom2momed! While you are at it, follow us on Instagram HERE and Facebook HERE.
